On Decorating For The Holidays

holidayI’ve been asked this several times in the past week: “Is it okay to decorate my home for the holidays when I have it listed?”

My answer has always been: “If you want to.”

The more I think about it – that doesn’t sound like professional advice – kind of like shrugging my shoulders and giving a Jeff Foxworthy-esc “Yah-ump-too.”  Analyzing it a bit further and reaching back to the advice we give all year is – depersonalize the home so we can sell.  Decking the halls to the max is hardly depersonalized.  But then again, tis the season.

Think, think think, it’s hardly fair to give a resounding “No.” and then I remembered.  One of the core fundamentals I learned in my staging courses was compromise. In this situation, compromise doesn’t mean “go a head and decorate your house so you can see it from space,” but a mere modest sampling of your FAVORITE decorations tastefully displayed.  Of COURSE you can have a Christmas Tree decked out with ornaments, and heck – even lights on your house – just make sure it doesn’t distract or completely stand out in your neighborhood, because as much as you may like it – the potential buyer may not.

My advice: Keep it simple, take it down after Christmas.

What are your thoughts?

Looking for Christmas Lights in Spokane?

If you’ve ever wondered if there was a central repository for Christmas Lights in Spokane, you’re not alone.  Every year I scour the web looking for the best Christmas light displays.  This year – I’ve decided to share.

The Spokesman Review’s Holiday Light List – A great resource of a few light sets (this will grow as neighbors put up lights – book mark this site and check back frequently).

The Spokane Christmas Lights Walk – Hurry – this one is coming up, a great walk around looking at local light displays.

Downtown Spokane – Just after Thanksgiving the City of Spokane starts decorating skywalks, trees and the park with holiday cheer.  Check out one of our many great dining establishments downtown and take a stroll around and visit Santa at the River Park Square.

UPDATE -> Davenport Hotel! Can’t miss their tree and lights!

If you have a favorite – let us know!

This is cool, from ‘07, but still cool.

Toys for Tots Promotion – Help out, it’s easy!

toys_for_totsEvery year Crystal & I head to Toys ‘R’ Us and round up a cart load of toys for the Toys for Tots foundation.  This year we wanted to take it a bit further.

For the month of November (11/7) through the first week in December (12/6), the Spokane Home Guy Team will match (1 toy for 1 toy) any donation brought to one of our Open Houses up to a total of 100 toys!

How to qualify?  Bring any new, unwrapped toy to one of our open houses between the dates above and drop it off.  We’ll match the Toy Donation with a new-unwrapped toy of our own and drop them all off at the Toys For Tots distribution center.  It’s that easy!

This week’s Opportunity:
4608 S. Progress – Sunday 12/06/2009 from 1-4 PM

** OTHER DATES WILL BE ADDED AS WE CONFIRM THEM THROUGH THE WEEK PLEASE CHECK BACK **
See you there!
